Help with the South Beach diet, please?

I’m a five foot seven fifteen year old female athlete. I weight about 190 pounds, but a large percentage of that is muscle. I’ve gained some weight this summer, and I’m looking to loose it before I go off to training. My mum recommend the South Beach diet.
My problem is that I do swim team, and work myself hard at practice daily. Also, I play tennis or run every evening. I feel weak and have terrible headaches all day long. Is it still healthy for me to go without carbs/sugar for the first two weeks, and do you have any suggestions to help me get through it?
For those of you who don’t know how the South Beach Diet works:
For the first two weeks, you drop sugar, fruit, and carbs entirely, just to reset your metabolism. After that, you re-introduce moderate proportions of these foods.

Perhaps a better diet than the South Beach diet would be the Atkins diet which is basically all animal protein plus non-starchy carbohydrates (fruit and most vegetables) but no starchy carbohydrates (bread, cereals, pasta, potatoes, sweet potatoes and a few others).

The Atkins diet has a high success rate and you can get a whole book on it from health stores.

Eliminating non-starchy carbohydrates for 2 whole weeks, as in the South Beach diet, is no good.
